Dictionary Definition:
A usually portable device for raising heavy objects by means of force applied with a lever, screw, or hydraulic press.
- Jacks should never be used to support a lifted load. Once the load has been lifted it should immediately have blocks placed under the load, to support it.
- Use wooden blocking under the base of the jack, if it is necessary to make the jack level and secure. If the load surface is metal, place a 25mm hardwood block between it and the jack head to reduce the danger of slippage.
- When setting up a jack, make sure:-
- The base rests on a firm level surface.
- The jack is correctly centred against the load surface.
- The jack head bears against a level load surface.
- The lift force is applied evenly.
- All jacks should be inspected before each use and lubricated regularly.
- If a jack is subjected to an abnormal load or shock, it should be thoroughly examined for damage.
- Hydraulic jacks exposed to freezing temperatures must be filled with the appropriate antifreeze liquid.
