What are alkaline batteries?

Alkaline batteries use an alkaline electrolyte of potassium hydroxide. They derive their energy from the reaction between zinc metal and manganese dioxide.

Why buy alkaline batteries?

Alkaline batteries are a better choice for devices that need standby power, such as a smoke alarm, due to being able to self-discharge at around 2% per year. They are mainly used in low-drain devices, but can be used in a wide variety of products, such as clocks, toys and radios.
