What is a letter & number stamp?

Designed for making permanent marks of identification on metal workpieces, letter and number stamps are essentially a metal peg with a raised letter or number at the end. Much like a centre punch, these stamps are usually hit with a hammer to stamp the letter or number into the desired material.

Why safety letter & number stamps?

These stamps or punches as they're sometimes known, deliver uniform permanent marking to products or company belongings. They remain legible even after painting or plating has taken place to ensure the marks are distinct and easy to read.

When are letter & number stamps used?

Used widely in manufacturing industries, products are often named using these stamps to ensure clear and permanent identification.

What does the standard ISO 9001:2008 mean?

ISO 9001:2008 outlines the requirements for quality production. It's adhered to by businesses using a Quality Management System to ensure a product meets the quality and safety requirements expected by the customer and the regulating body.

Let's break it down...

• ISO - The International Organisation for Standardisation establishes and enforces standards for industry and commerce

• 9001 - This is the standard's identification number and falls under the ISO 9000 umbrella to maintain the same use of numbering across the board

• 2008 - This is the year this standard was updated. The update incorporated the term 'statutory' to read '...[a] product that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements'

FAQs

What kind of metal can be stamped?

Versatile alloys such as aluminium, stainless steel, bronze, nickel and brass are ideal for stamping.

What's the difference between stamping and embossing?

Stamping a material creates an indented letter or number. Embossing, on the other hand, creates a raised character.

Do you need a special hammer for metal stamping?

Not at all. A general-purpose hammer with a flat face will do the trick. It should have a good weight to it, but not be so heavy that you can't control the taps.
