End Mills Corner Radius

Corner radius end mills (or bull nose end mills) are designed to cut a fixed corner radius in a workpiece with ease. These end mill types are designed for outstanding durability and increased feed rates to get the job done quickly and reliably.

Cromwell stocks a wide range of high-quality corner radius end mills, from trusted brands used by industry professionals around the globe such as Dormer® and SwissTech®.

What are corner radius end mills?

Corner radius end mills are similar in design to other types of end mill, with a rounded edge that makes them excel at cutting fixed corner radii.

Corner radius end mills have a rounded cutting edge at one end, and a standard shaft to be inserted into a milling machine at the other.

Why a corner radius end mill?

Corner radius end mills are designed to make a corner radius at the bottom of a milled shoulder.

They boast a much stronger milling edge than regular square end mills, meaning increased feed rates can be used, a longer overall tool life, and enhanced overall productivity.

When are corner radius end mills used?

Corner radius end mills are used to make a fixed radius in a workpiece. This makes them the ideal type of end mill for any job where a specific radius size is required, such as milling radius bottom slots, contours, and fillets.

Considerations when choosing a corner radius end mill

• Coating

Coated end mills have far greater resistance, durability, and performance over non-coated equivalents. When picking a corner radius end mill, it's important to get the right coating for your needs. Here are the main coatings available for end mills:

AICrN - Aluminium chromium nitride coating is a titanium-free coating that increases wear resistance, especially at lower feeds and speeds. At higher speeds, the coating provides heat and oxidation resistance, with thermal stability up to 1100°C.

TiSiN - Titanium silicium nitride coating provides hardness alongside thermal and oxidation resistance for your end mill. Similar to AICrN coatings, TiSiN boasts thermal stability up to 1100°C.

AITiN - Titanium aluminium nitride coating provides high hardness, toughness, and resistance to oxidation with the added benefit of reducing superficial roughness. It sacrifices on thermal resistance compared to the other coatings (with thermal stability of 900°C) but makes up for it with increased overall durability.
