What are sirens & buzzers?

Sirens and buzzers are loud audible devices intended to warn against a number of things. These include a fire warning or other hazards that require evacuation, a machine or equipment fault, and security issues, such as an external fire escape door being opened from the outside.

They can be mechanical, electronic, or powered by Piezo technology, and are often attached to a wider alarm system, such as smoke detectors or switchboards. Impossible to ignore, they ensure that everyone is aware of the need to take action.

Siren & buzzer types

There are a wide range of siren and buzzer types available to integrate into current safety and security systems. They can be installed or are supplied as free-standing units and are generally easy to put in.

• Electromechanical buzzers   -   These feature an electromagnet and metal disc which together create a magnetic field when exposed to voltage. This field enables the magnet to move inside the casing to create a sound.

• Piezo buzzers   -   These devices contain an integrated piezo electric plate or element. When exposed to voltage, the plate vibrates and creates sound.

• Siren strobe   -   This is a combination of sound and flashing light to alert a workforce using both audible and visual signals.

• Sirens   -   This product requires a motor to spin an integrated fan or blower to send waves of air pressure though a spinning perforated disc. As the air hits different parts of the disc, the stream fluctuates and produces pressure waves that the human ear recognises as sound.

Considerations when choosing sirens & buzzers

• Signal type - many products come with multiple tone options, a combination of flashing lights and a tone, or just lights if discretion is required.

• Sound output - for varied levels of sound in different locations, choose a model with an adjustable output and pay attention to the maximum decibels on the technical specifications sheet.

Where do you put alarm sirens?

Depending on the size of the premises, a siren should be placed centrally to cover as much of the location as possible. For large and spread-out businesses, multiple sirens or an interconnected warning system can be installed. However, some businesses utilise an alternative staff system, where sirens notify particular departments, which triggers a pre-agreed evacuation strategy.

What's the difference between a Piezo and electromechanical buzzer?

There are a few differences between these products. The electromechanical variants operate on a wider voltage range than the Piezo type and require a higher current, while producing a lower sound. The Piezo variants are more economical in that they require lower consumption for a louder sound, but if a low frequency sound is required, then the electromechanical option is the best.
